Why Snack Time Math?
I want to show you how you can connect with your child and lay a strong mathematical foundation, all while having fun!
My six- and three-year-old daughters and I were sitting at the kitchen table one day having a snack of Goldfish crackers and raisins. Light was streaming through the windows, and we were having a pleasant conversation. One of those conversations that a mom of young children truly appreciates.
As we talked and ate, I thought about how I wanted math to be a part of our daily life, not an isolated subject. And how I wanted to find a fun way to incorporate math concepts and math practice in a natural way.
How could I incorporate math into my young child’s daily routine in a way that was fun, engaging, and practical while not spending hours planning lessons that would be consumed or completed in mere minutes? How could we learn and practice math concepts without using worksheets?
As I pondered these questions, I realized we could incorporate math into our snack time. We started working on basic concepts such as counting, addition, and subtraction during our snack time. I created story problems about the "Katy whale" that saw fish joining the school of fish swimming by and how much she enjoyed eating some of those fish. As the story progressed, my daughter counted her fish, added more or ate a few, and told me how many were remaining on her plate. We also worked on additional concepts, such as spatial words and estimation skills. And snack time math lessons were born.
Math practice became fun. It was developmentally appropriate as we used manipulatives to make the lessons hands-on and concrete.
An added benefit was that we were connecting through a story and shared experience. It was no longer just about completing a math lesson.
That’s why I created Snack Time Math. I wanted you to be able to connect with your child and help him improve his math skills at the same time.
